Strong earthquake hits Indonesian province
A strong earthquake hit the Indonesian province of Papua on Sunday night, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. The 6.5-degree quake was centered about 53 kilometers northeast of the city of Waren, and about 132 kilometers deep. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) estimated some 98,000 people may have felt moderate to strong shaking, which could potentially result in light to moderate damage.
No tsunami alerts were issued by the authorities. Indonesia lies on the so-called 'Pacific Ring of Fire', an arc of fault lines circling the Pacific Basin that is prone to frequent and large earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
