Rio Tinto to open first primary nickel mine in the U.S. for years
Rio Tinto announced this week it will invest US$ 469 million in the development of the Kennecott Eagle nickel mine in the U.S. state of Michigan. The project will be the first new primary nickel venture in America for years and caused controversy as environmentalists and native Indians accused the project could pollute the region’s water system. Rio Tinto committed to build a water treatment plant, which will be commissioned later this year. Construction of the mill and the underground mine will begin this year and first production is expected in late 2013.
It is expected that Kennecott will add an average of 17,300 tonnes of nickel and 13,200 tonnes of copper concentrates annually over six years.
