Earthquake kills 65 in New Zealand
A powerful earthquake hit New Zealand’s city of Christchurch on Tuesday, collapsing buildings, destroying vehicles, splitting roads and killing 65 people. The 6.3-magnitude quake hit the country's second-biggest city on a busy weekday afternoon and closer to downtown. The city declared a state of emergency and ordered people to evacuate the downtown region.
Christchurch was hit by a 7.1-degree earthquake last September, which cost the city over US$ 3 billion in reconstruction works that were still being conduced when today’s quake was felt. Meanwhile, it has also triggered tsunamis on the Tasman Lake, causing glaciers to calve into the water.
