Australia invites Chinese miners to discuss new tax policy
The controversy goes on: Australian government has invited Chinese mining companies to discuss the proposed tax on the sector, after the Asian giant expressed concern about the rising fees. However, Trade Minister Simon Crean said the government wants to listen to the miners on the implementation of and transition to the tax – the 40% rate will not be discussed.
The proposed tax has angered dozens of mining companies, both local and foreign, which have placed billions of dollars worth of projects on hold or under review as a result and have warned the new tax policy will lead to job losses and investment going offshore. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd defended it on Friday saying he believed the government had "this policy basically right".
